‘My passion for nature is the predominant focus for my work with the aim to create paintings that incorporate my enthusiasm for the decorative qualities of art, while still adhering to certain traditions of landscape painting. I use the landscape as a tool in which to express my own reactions to it, the memory I’m left with. In particular using trees, animals and plants to convey a certain mood or atmosphere, it’s like a search for the most idyllic place, a self constructed Eden. Starting with sketches and photographs of places I’ve visited, these soon become distorted, and changed through the process of painting, resulting in a more mystical representation.
I am drawn to grand gardens where nature has been architecturally constructed, such as labyrinths, sculpted hedges and the contrasts of order and chaos that is often found when man and nature interact. Playing with space on the paper or canvas I can construct my own garden/ landscape in a similar fashion. This removes my work from the genre of the traditional landscape and gives the viewer something that plays with the imagination.’
