I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1988 with a BA (Hons) in painting and drawing. On leaving college I set up a studio painting commissioned portraits, I continued painting commissioned portraits on and off up until 2000. After having children I then returned to the studio in 2004 and decided that I wanted to be able to put together a collection of paintings that could be exhibited instead of working to commission.
Recently I have been working on still lifes; my style of painting is traditional, I use colour and light to give my work a contemporary vibrancy. For me the process of working from life is important to capture the colours of the fruit and drapes as I see them. To produce the depth of colour, I use a technique of under painting in opposite colours, combined with building up colours in layers over days or weeks.
I’m not seeking to replicate the still life work of the past. Much as I am influenced by the 17th century Spanish still life masters, the Dutch artist Vermeer and many, many others. I seek to maintain a contemporary element that reflects my story much as David McClure RSA, RSW (1926-1998) does in his work.
I am currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland and have paintings in private collections throughout the UK.
