I am continuously fascinated by the world around me, and through choice I tend to concentrate on giving coherent visual responses to what I may feel subconsciously. I love life and my work is often a celebration of this.
Land also intrigues me, as it is seemingly constant yet in reality is constantly changing. My travels take me from Italy and Spain to the Indian Ocean and North America, but wherever I go it seems to me that the landforms are linked. I am always amazed by the vibrant colour of sunny climes and the contrast of land shapes, trees and plants which inform my paintings. Hot sunny places, for me, often trigger the beat of music in my head, so I attempt to convey some of these rhythms in my work.
Over the past year or two the figure has begun to re-appear in my paintings – I like the action and interaction and the fact that they seem as players on a stage. When they leave after the play, the stage remains but it is different.
The perspective of memory can alter or clarify elements of the land or of relationships. Although I frequently work directly from the land or figure, the distance of the studio allows me to reflect and distill. Life is made up of tiny moments which are fleeting, even though the heartbeat and pulse of the landscape continues.
