This new body of work continues my exploration of the human figure and the painted surface. These are mainly solitary and isolated figures and I am interested in the presence they evoke in an unspecified space.
The figures grow out of a dialogue with the paint and are invented and imagined, not specific to an individual. Put simply, I make figures out of oil paint and try to let the paint be paint.
The oil paint is layered on with brushes and palette knives until I achieve a ‘working surface’ that can be pushed and pulled around as a figure begins to emerge and assert itself. I use a lot of oil paint to build up the layers of the surface over many weeks or even months. Part of this process involves a physical interaction between me and the materials. At times the paint is laid on with great sensitivity and at other times a sort of attack takes place upon the canvas, where the paint is energetically laid on then scraped or wiped back. Often I make invasive graphic incisions using a palette knife, which sometimes allude to words or text.
This process produces a tension between form (the figure) and space, where a unity of visual form and human content has to be sought. These figures often appear ill at ease and it is this physical and emotional awkwardness that I seek to explore. This new group of paintings often reflect a man or a woman in the act of moving. It can be through the simplest of gestures that a more profound human condition is revealed.
